What Causes Swelling In Inner Cheek Along With Broken Tooth?

Hi there- I have had a crack in my tooth since August. In August the dentist said we would just watch it. I went back at the end of February and asked for the dentist to do something about it now because it bothers me sometimes when I chew hard foods on that side. He set me us with getting a crown, which is scheduled for mid April. This past week, I have bit down a few times and felt quick pain, and noticed the crack has gotten bigger. I have also been experiencing swelling on the cheek for the last week, on and off. No significant pain though. Is this something that can wait until mid April to take care of?

Hi..
Thanks for the query..

As per your complain as you have crack in the tooth it should have been treated immediately as if the treatment is delayed, the crack will definitely increase in size due to biting forces and also the tooth will get deep infection leading to nerve exposure and it will cause pain and at times pus formation below the root tips of the tooth leading to swelling..

As you are getting swelling that seems to be due to inflammation and pus formation and also pain on biting the tooth needs an x ray followed by treatment like root canal or in case if the crack is deep extraction of the tooth is needed..

You should not get crown placed as there can be increased pain and discomfort and you can get severe swelling..
Also waiting for long time is not a good idea as it can increase the tooth damage and chances of saving the tooth can decline..

Hope this helps..

Regards..
