What Causes Swelling In Legs When Suffering From Congestive Heart Failure?

My mother is 94 years old with congestive heart failure. She does not sl eep much at night, does not eat much and cannot taste anything. Her feet and legs are swollen and she gets very tired. Is this the last phase of the disease. She has been in a nursing home for 6 years. What is her prognosis.

Hello. I am Dr. Praveen and I will be answering your question today.
Sorry to hear she is not doing too well. In congestive heart failure since the heart is unable to pump out blood what happens is the blood that comes to the heart is sort of held up in its way. Sort of like a road block you know. That causes the swelling in the lower limbs and dependent areas. Given her age and the clinical condition that your explained she is in the prognosis is not the brightest. In her case the treatment would be to keep her quality of life reasonably good and help her medically to sustain as well as she can tolerate.
Wishing her good health. Please feel free to drop in any more queries if need be.
Warm regards,
Dr Praveen Jeyapathy
