What Causes Swelling In My Ankles And Legs?

I have swelling/fluid retention in my ankles & legs; all my blood work came back well within normal limits; bp Great; pulse Great; lungs Great. My PCP prescribed Furosemide 20 mg qd. I really really really don t like taking prescription medication. If all my lab work is great, then it seems like I should be able to take in more potassium & magnesium through my diet. I drink lots of water already. I am 64 years old. I walk a lot. I work full time, desk job, but up and down the hall a lot too. I don t eat processed foods, or salt, except what is naturally in food already. Any suggestions would be appreciated. Oh, my ankles are 10.75 in the evening before bed, and in the morning they are 9.25 even though I haven t gotten up during the night to void. Also, they never fully get to a point that I can see my ankles. This has been going on for over a month and I don t know what I am doing differently. Thank-you so much! Patty

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello
You are healthy , doing exercise regularly B P normal , lungs great , pulse great . But question is that then , Why are you having swelling over ankle and legs . Yes this is a cause of concern particularly in a person at the age of 65 years in spite of healthy life. Such swelling may be due these reasons , these includes.
1 Congestive heart failure , as this is most common cause in this age group So please get in E K G , E CHO and color doppler to rule out CHF ( CONGESTIVE HEART FAILURE ).
2 Hypoproteinaemia as this is also most common cause get in blood for protein analysis . Also get in urine complete examination.
3 Anemia is another such cause but you mentioned that you are physically very active so we can rule out this .
4 Chronic renal failure . Get in ultrasound of both kidneys as well as serum creatinine and blood urea examination.
In my opinion consult a nepherologist and get his opinion as this type of swelling is a cause of concern.
Hope this information will be helpful for you.
