What Causes Swelling In The Ankles And Legs While Suffering From Diabetes?

I ll undergo lab tests tomorrow. I have been insulin-dependent for 43 years. My DOB is 10/21/34. I have never had a 3 or 4 month A1C less than an 8.3. I was hospitalized 8/17/2017 through 8/25/2017 for diabetic ketoacidosis. Also, because my legs and ankles have been swollen for over 2 years, and thinking I now have a heart problem, I contacted a cardiologist. During this appointment, he prescribed Furosemide, 20 Mg, on 8/9/17. This medication caused great stomach pain and then nausea. I was admitted to Shadyside Presbyterian Hospital. After having both an EKG and an Echocardiogram, cardiologist said I had a slight right-sided ? ? of my heart; then prescribed 10 Mg tablet of Torsemide. Many of the long list of lab tests I do not know anything about. My 53 year old daughter, Karen will accompany me tomorrow for the first time. she, and my remaining 3 children feel strongly about changing my endocrinologist. IT s 3:47 a.m. Must get to bed. Thank you. Marianne Tarullo

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service.
I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

Your problem is a little bit complicated since you have heart problems, maybe right side insufficiency this usually leads to swelling of legs and ankles. Also a long time of not equilibrated diabetes (referring to Hba1C 8.3) contributes to kidney damage and kidney insufficiency leading to edema and accumulation of fluids in body.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Regards,
Dr. Olgeta Xhufka
