What Causes Swelling In The Centre Of The Lips?

My daughter's lip swelled up in the center, and then went away. It swelled up again on the edge of her lip last evening and went away during the night. This evening it started to swell in the center again. She hasn't been bitten by anything that she is aware. We were thinking allergic reaction the first night, but since it comes and goes, that seems odd.

Hi..
Thanks for writing to us..

I can understand your concern for your daughter..

Swelling of lips that comes and goes and also changes the place is most probably due to Allergic reaction only..
It looks like she is eating something that she is allergic to but is not known to you..
If it would have been insect/bug bite then the swelling would not come and go.
Such recurring swelling is commonly seen in allergic reactions..
So my suggestion to you is to give her benadryl and do cool compresses over the lips..
If the swelling still continue to occur again and again then it i advisable to check with an Allergist who can conduct an Allergy test to rule out for the exact cause of the swelling.
If it is any food or medicine then eliminating it from the diet will prevent its recurrence.
If it is due to any skin cosmetic, soap etc then avoiding using the same will prevent recurrence of swelling.
If it still occurs then taking antihistamines will help as well as your allergist can plan Immunotherapy..

Hope your query is resolved..

Regards.
