What Causes Swelling In The Elbow After Receiving A Cortisone Shot?

My husband had an injury to his elbow playing golf. He was diagnosed as having bursitis and a bone spur. He received a cortisone shot about 8 weeks ago. Two days ago his elbow showed signs of swelling as if there was water in it. No pain, however.

Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service. I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

By your history and description possibility of synovitis (inflammation of joint space) is more likely. Synovitis can cause accumulation of fluid in joints. Local steroidal injection can cause synovitis. So better to take him to orthopedic doctor and get done clinical examination and MRI of elbow joint. He may need aspiration from elbow joint.
