hi doc. my father is 65yrs old.he is diabetic and has a slightly high bp.he has been loosing weight, feeling sick, not eating well and complainig of feet swelling. i got all his tests done.there is a bit a protein loss in urine and his GGMT is high coz of alchohol.the major problem is feet swelling.he has pain too.can u suggest what it could be?
Hello there, Swelling in the feet in your father's case could be due to various reasons. It could be because of the protein leaking in his urine which causes protein loss and so water shifts into the tissues of dependent parts of body.He may have less protein in the body even due to poor oral intake or due to any liver problems. Only GGT being elevated does not indicate much but would like to know the values for any further comment on the same. It could also be due to some antihypertensive or antidiabetic medications. The reason needs to be found out. I suggest you see a physician who could review the medicines and the test reports to conclude the cause of leg swelling. In the meanwhile ask your father to keep his legs raised on a chair while sitting or on a few pillows while lying down this will help in reducing the swelling to some extent. Regards
