What Causes Swelling In The Hand And Fingers After Shoulder Dislocation?

My son dislocated his shoulder yesterday. It was ex rayed and no broken bones. Today he has been sitting around with it supported by a pillow with his arm up on a pillow about chest high, and taking it easy. But as the day has progressed his lower arm has gotten quite swollen. His hand is very puffy and fingers sausage like... Is this normal? should I take him to be seen?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi.
I've gone through your query and I can understand your anxiety.

Shoulder dislocation is a emergency condition seeking immediate attention. It's most you should take your son to an emergency room as soon as possible.

I advice to,
- keep Ice pack to reduce pain & swelling.
- Use a proper sling to immobilise the shoulder
- Take anti-inflammatory & analgesics
-After proper reduction by doctor, Practice stretching exercises if adviced.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further. Take care.

Regards,
Dr. Yogapriya V, General and family physician.
