What Causes Swelling In The Hand?

My 86 years old mother: the other day her hands looked somewhat distorted. I just went to visit her today and they are swollen and her ankles are slightly swollen. We were able to get an appointment with her doctor for Tuesday but I am concerned. She has not yet been diagnosed with rheumotoid arthritis but I am preparing for the visit. Thank you.

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi,

Swollen hands and joints may be caused by RA. Some times RA may occur suddenly in elder people so it's possible she may have just had it. However, RA is not the only cause of inflammed joints. There are other causes like reactive arthritis, viral arthritis, and a few more causes which may be less likely in her case. So it would need proper assessment and tests. For the time being, she may be used paracetamol for her pain.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
