What Causes Swelling In The Knees After A Knee Replacement Surgery?

I had knee replacement surgery 8 days ago. Still swollen and black and blue. Physical therapy is going pretty well. I am still bothered by a pins and needles feeling around my knee and down my leg. How long will this last? Is there anything I can do?

Hi there,

Swelling after surgery is extremely common. This is due to the inflammation from the injury that was caused. Although it was a controlled injury, the body still treats all injury the same and that's with an inflammatory reaction. I'd recommend using ice - 15 minutes on, 15 minutes off as long as he can do it. I'd also recommend you use ibupfrofen if you don't have any history of bleeding or kidney problems- this will help you with the pain. Swelling will often last up to two weeks, but should improve each day. If you are not improving and having concerns, please make an appointment to see the surgeon sooner.

I hope I have answered your question. Feel free to contact me if you have any further questions.
