What Causes Swelling In The Labia Minora?

Hi. I have what seems like herpes symptoms. But one side of my labia minora is swollen (which is where the infection started with one red spot) and blood has been oozing out from that area for the past three days. I am not sure if the blood is my period forcing its way upwards because my vagina is swollen, or bleeding from my urethra, or is it something else. Can i get help?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,

If you are having genital herpes, it may cause swelling of the labia due to inflammation and local irritation. Sometimes if a secondary skin infection develops the swelling may be worse.

I would recommend you to see your doctor and confirm the diagnosis. If you are having herpes then acyclovir can be used to help with it and also you can take ibuprofen for pain. Local cool compresses may help as well.

The doctor may also check where does the bleeding come from and if there is a secondary bacterial infection present can give you some antibiotics. The doctor can also check for other sexually transmitted diseases. Generally sexually transmitted diseases travel together. Genital herpes is a sexually transmitted disease (STD) and the patient needs to be checked for other STDs like chlamydia, gonorrhea, HIV, HepB, syphilis, etc.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
