What Causes Swelling In The Left Hand After A Heart Surgery?

My father had a heart surgery on 11/15/17 and it has been 5 days since the surgery. They put a battery inside the heart to support his heart. In the last 2 days, his left hands and elbow are a little swollen and he has achy pain in the elbow when folding his hand. Is it normal to have all of this?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi.

I am glad we connected.

Based on the description you have mentioned, it sounds like a pacemaker has been placed inside or next to the heart.

Like with any surgery, it is possible for one to develop an infection or tingling as a side effect. this may indicate bleeding, infection, or some other causes.

It would be a good idea to get this checked out by his surgeon for help for this. I hope this helps you! All the best.
