Firstly, sorry to hear about your grandfather.
As per my clinical experience of 12 years with
geriatrics, I think he might be prone to infection and the antibiotics will be given, as in aging, the immune system is weak and smallest infection can lead to the major downfall of the person physically. Also, swelling is a common case with old age, as there is less walking and the
cardiac muscle becomes weak for pumping out the metabolic waste. Maybe the physician can opt for a
diuretic for removing the excess fluid from the body so that the cardiac overload doesn't happen. Sleeping pills are sometimes mentioned too, as the body heals better in resting.
Also, as he is 80, I will advise raising the leg part of the bed when he is lying down, as this will help venous return to happen and reduce the swelling from the legs and the organs mentioned.
Doing some low-intensity physical exercises will be of great help at this age to improve the quality of life and also the activities of daily living.
