What Causes Swelling In The Legs And Arms?

I have a history of hypertension. I woke yesterday with my legs swollen all the way to my toes...the toes were red and burning. My skin (on my legs) felt incredibly tight. I had noticed for a few days before this started that i appeared to be gaining weight quite rapidly....even though I had been on a new exercise program that was in no way easy so results should have been if anything, in the opposite direction. I now beieve that was swelling too. My arms began to get into the act.

Thanks for your question on Healthcare Magic.
I can understand your concern.
Swelling in the legs, weight gain in hypertension patient is suggestive of water retention.
Water retention can be due to either heart failure or kidney involvement.
So better to consult doctor and get done ecg, 2d echo and Renal function test (RFT).
You will need diuretics and other supportive drugs on the basis of reports.
Hope I have solved your query. I will be happy to help you further. Wish you good health. Thanks.
