What Causes Swelling In The Lower Legs?

Both of my legs are swollen mostly from the knee down. The skin color changes from white to red about 5 below my knees all the way to my feet. Sometimes there is a pain in the top of my feet, like a shooting pain not unbearable but noticeable, lasts sometimes 10 seconds or less. Doesn t seem to keep me from doing things but at the same time is not getting any better. Skin on feet feels tight, I notice that. A feeling of some heat in the feet but cool to the touch. No bleeding, No sore looking spots anywhere or any one place that is more sensitive than any place else. Weight bearing or non weight bearing makes no difference. Does not wake me up in the middle of the night with pain. Body functions seem normal, temp normal, bowel and urine seem normal. No cravings or changes in diet. Not taking any medications for anything. My health history is boring, never been in the military. Besides a cold once in a while and the flu once or twice I have been healthy my entire life. Childhood diseases; chicken pox, measles, mumps, normal kid stuff. Mononucleosis in high school was the last thing I ever had. Came through all of them OK with no hangovers.

Neurologist 's  Response
Hello,

There can be several causes for swelling in the feet. Kidney conditions often present with swelling as a prominent symptom. Rheumatological conditions like lupus may also be another cause. Heart or liver conditions are another possible origin.

So some tests are necessary to search for the cause. I would speak with your doctor about some routine screening blood tests as a starting point, to check kidney and liver function as well as inflammation markers and autoimmune antibodies for rheumatological conditions.

Hope I have answered your query.
Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Olsi Taka,
Neurologist.
