What Causes Swelling In The Lower Lip?

I was awakened by a swollen lower lip...twice at least normal size. It is stiff as well. There is no sign of a bug bite or any other immediate cause. I had taken drunk an Airborne effervescent drink just before bed, five hours prior, but have had that preventive prior to taking an airline flight before many times without reaction. I consumed no unusual food prior to this either. I cannot think of anything I did or took 24 hours before that would result in my being awakened after five hours of sleep that would cause sudden swelling of the lower lip. I have no other symptoms.

Hi.
Thanks for the query..

It seems that the symptoms of swelling of lips with no other apparent symptoms can be due to Allergic reaction causing Allergic Angioedema of lips....

It can be due to any food or medication while other causes can be allergic reaction to any skin cosmetic, soap, lip balm etc..

I would suggest you to consult an Emergency room and get evaluated and a clinical evaluation and if there is a suspect of allergic reaction, investigations like blood tests for allergies like RAST TEST, Patch test, Food Challenge test can help in ruling out the exact cause of the symptoms and treat accordingly.

As of now take anti allergics like Levocetrizine..
Do cool compresses over the lips .
You can be advised injectable steroids and antihistamines to reduce swelling..

Hope this helps..

Regards..
