What Causes Swelling In The Right Knee And Shin?

For the past two weeks my husband has had increased swelling of right knee, shin and ankle with pain when walking. The past week he s sat in our recliner with his legs elevated at or above his heart using a pillow and ice packs. He says after reclining approximately fifteen minutes the pain seems to be from the edema only. He spends an equal amount of his workday walking / standing and sitting. Walking / standing for longer periods than sitting. He works ten to twelve hours per day, six days a week. Most days over the past two weeks he s worn a knee brace. The stretchy, sleeve kind with patella hole and metal side springs. The brace provides support but not immobilization. Today the swelling and pain are no better or worse however, the skin is red and hot to the touch. My husband doesn t have a fever and he says he doesn t have nausea, shortness of breath or abdominal pain. He didn t bump or injure the knee, shin or ankle today. The pain is dull, achey and constant when walking / standing. Two months ago my husband, with speed and force, ran into the ball hitch on our truck hitting his knee and shin. He had a large scrape from the top of his knee down to about the middle of his shin. He had a lot of bruising and swelling. The swelling gradually lessened to none after a few days and came back with pain after six weeks. Today the skin over my husbands knee, shin and ankle is red and hot to the touch. We are very concerned. Could this be related to his injury two months ago? Should we go to the ER or wait until Monday to get an appointment with our primary physician? Thank you for any insight or advice you can give us!

Hi,

You should take him to the ER. It could be a localised infections which might slowly spread.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
