What Causes Swelling In The Stomach While Suffering From Alcoholism?

My hubby drinks a lot. Lot means really a lot Well he was admitted n rehab. Wthin a day he was tken a blood test and was told he had jayndice 3 points. Also he has a huge swelling of his stomach He cme out of rehab wthin twondays and. Ow he got admitted in a big pvt hospital. Can u tell what cud be his situation now healthwise. Drs are confused and so tkng a scan after two days

Hi,

1. As you said your husbands is a chronic alcoholic.

Blood test says he has jaundice with swelling of the abdomen (Ascitis in medical terms) then he is suffering from alcoholic liver disease.

Ascitis happens because of the fluid accumulates in the space between tissue and organs which is the end result of the failure of the liver function.

2. To treat jaundice you need to visit your physician where he will prescribe you the enzymes necessary for the functioning of the liver.

3. In the hospital, doctors can also perform a procedure called paracentesis which means they will remove the excess fluid from the abdomen.
