Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
over the last two weeks my right thumb has become swollen and I can t bend it without a great deal of pain. Sometimes it loosens up to the point where I can but you can hear it pop when it shifts. The base of the thumb is very sore and I can t grip anything. Any ideas how I can reduce the inflammation?
The swelling thumb is caused most probably due to infection of nail bed. I advise to: - apply alternating warm and cold compresses locally to help pop out the internal fluid - take pain killers like acetaminophen or ibuprofen - if pus is coming out, antibiotic ointment should be applied on the nail bed.
If no improvement, should consult further with your physician as might need slight incision or prescription meds.
Wish fast recovery.
