What Causes Swelling In The Toes After Severe Muscle Cramps?

I had Charlie horse cramps on Sunday - pain went away in left foot but toes and tissue above toes remain swollen and tender. Swelling is reduced by elevating foot but as soon as I am up and around the swelling and redness return on the top of the foot and toes and it feels like there I am walking on something on the ball of my foot. - only in left foot

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,

Swelling in the toes are commonly due to water retention in the body due to kidney or liver dysfunction. It can be due to the inflammation & pain caused by RA OR OA.

Since you have a history of Charlie horse swelling. The swelling in the toes can also be due to low potassium, sodium, calcium levels in the blood, nerve compression, stress or inadequate blood flow or overuse of specific muscle exercises.

You are suggested to visit a GP, get physically examined. Get MRI & blood work outs done to rule out low sodium, potassium or calcium levels. Your treatment will depend upon the severity of the pathology detected.

In the meantime you can take NSAIDS along with antispasmodic medications to get rid of muscle cramps & discomfort.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Take care.

Regards,
Dr. Nupur K, General & Family Physician
