My second toe has been swollen at the joint for two months. I had a pedicure and the next evening I was wearing sandals and stepped off the sidewalk onto the grass to let some people pass. When I stepped back, my toe was red, burning and swollen at the first joint. i thought i had been bitten by something, but the swelling has never gone away. I had blood test for zika, gout, arthritis. No answers. A podiatrist thought it was a nail infection that went to the joint, but my primary care doctor thought that was crazy because there is no fungal infection of the nail.
