What Causes Swelling Of Vein In The Palm?

I suddenly felt a pain in the palm of my hand. The major blue vein there had swollen from the wrist to the mid point of my palm. It hurt And itched after a while the vein went back to normal size but my entire wrist and hand was black and blue. What is causing this? Is it serious?
