What Causes Swelling On Ankles?

The last few days i have noticed that my ankles were swelling. Elevating them does not seem to help. They are even swollen when i wake up in the morning. Now today I am feeling a little discomfort in my neck. I am one of those "only see a dr when absolutely necessary" people and hate to call if it is nothing more than a coincidence and just the heat causing the swelling.
