What Causes Swelling On Cheeks?

My grandson is swollen on both sides of his face. He looks like a chipmunk.took him to ER and they said it was only a swollen salivary gland. It is now four days nd he is still swollen. He has a temp. Of 98.9 soooo that isn't a concern, but he will not go to school looking like this. He is eight years old and in the third grade. Please help,I think he has the mumps.
Thanks,his Grandma.

Hi..
Welcome to HEALTHCARE MAGIC..

I have gone through your query and can understand your concerns..

As per your complain the symptoms of swelling on both sides of face with slight fever seems to be probably due to viral infection in parotid glands known as MUMPS PAROTITIS..
It leads to chipmunk like face due to swelling on both sides due to infection in the glands and can take from 7 to 8 days to resolve..
I would suggest you to consult an Infectious medicine specialist and get evaluated and he can do a clinical examination and investigations like blood tests, salivary amylase etc for confirmation of the cause and treat accordingly..
If mumps is confirmed as the cause then you can be advised to do cool compresses over the swellings..
You can give Acetaminophen if there is pain..
Do warm saline gargles and also take ample of fluids..
You can feed him with a soft diet..
Give sufficient rest..
As the infection is communicable in the initial week of active infection therefore you should avoid using personal belongings shared with him like glasses, towels etc..

Hope this information helps..

Thanks and regards.
