What Causes Swelling On Left Side Of Throat After Suffering From Tonsillitis?

Hi, I wanted to get a 2nd opinion. I had a bad case of tonsillitis effective 8th NOV where the left hand side was more enlarged than the other and more painful. On Monday I was prescribed roxithromycin and I went to the docs again on Wednesday as my throat was still painful and was prescribed Metronide. The course finishes Tuesday 17th NOV. I can now swallow properly and no pain. However the left hand side tonsil (top part of it -- hard to explain but the arch part) is still big/inflammed and does hurt when i yawn etc Could this be a peritonsillar abscess? There is no pus visible GP advised as long as pain goes then it could take 3-6 months to go down and not to worry
Does the antibiotics still work when the course is complete? Any advice?I am on a low dose of accutane (20 mg 3 times a week and my derm and doc says no issue in interactions) Thanks ,Shaun

Hi..
Welcome to HEALTHCARE MAGIC..

I have gone through your query and can understand your concern..

As per your complain Yes, it can be a Peritonsillar Abscess and it can cause severe pain in throat and inflammation of one or both the tonsils.
Antibiotics once stopped taking can not keep working for longer period of time as they have a definitive period [half life] for which they are active in the body..
If they are no more being taken the infection can recur again if it is not completely resolved..
I would suggest you to consult an Otolaryngologist and get evaluated and a thorough clinical evaluation will help in diagnosis that whether it is Peritonsillar abscess or tonsillitis..
Once the cause is confirmed treatment can be done accordingly..
In case of Peritonsillar abscess if it is not resolving with medicine incision and drainage can be done and in case of recurring conditions Tonsillectomy that is surgical removal of tonsils can be done..

Hope this information helps..

Thanks and regards.
