What Causes Swelling On The Face After Receiving Novocain Shots?

I had some Novocain shots in the upper part of my mouth ( at a dentist I've been going for about 17 years) all at once there was a pain going up the side of my face and that side swelled up very fast. The dentist said he couldn't figure what had happened, ordered antibiotics. Took them and still have a soreness in my nasal passage on the one side, an excess running of my nose. It's been two weeks now and there is still a slight pain in my nasal cavity. I was fitted for a new bridge and had a root canal. I have a temporary bridge now. When I push on the upper part on my mouth by my nose it hurts. My dentist said he asked a number of dentist and an oral surgeon about what happened. No one knew!

Hi..
Thanks for the query..

In case if you had injection by your upper back teeth then sudden swelling can be due to hematoma formation that is due to pricking of the blood vessels in the pterygoid plexus of veins..
Pain in the​ nasal cavity can be due to any infected teeth if you have a bridge in upper front teeth..
There can also be sinus infection leading to pain in nose and nasal drainage.
So an x ray like panoramic x Ray can help.in diagnosis...

For the swelling you can do cool compresses as it is sufficient to get the swelling reduced..
Avoid hot compresses as it can exaggerate swelling.

For pain in nasal cavity take anti inflammatory painkillers like Ibuprofen..
