What Causes Swelling On The Face?

My coworker came in this morning saying that her face felt so hot. Nothing else in her body. Her cheeks were rosy. As the day has gone on her face is looking swollen, mostly on her right side. She had one of our medical assisting students take her blood pressure which was high, and the MA student said she was noticing heart palpitations as she listened. I got her some Benadryl. Is this serious enough that she should go to a doctor right away or is it ok to wait and see if the Benadryl helps?

Hi there,

Flushing or swelling in the face, is usually due to an allergic reaction to something she came in contact with. Benadryl is a good choice, and I'd wait to see if that helped. I would also ask her if she ate any food that she doesn't regularly eat, had any new environmental contacts, used any new soap or detergents. If the flushing continues, I'd recommend she see a doctor, but I would only be concerned at this point if the benadryl did not help.

I hope I have answered your question. Feel free to contact me if you have any further questions.
