What Causes Swelling On The Feet And Hands With Lupus During Pregnancy?

I am 23 weeks pregnant and have Systemic Lupus. While this time of year I do not usually swell much due to the Lupus, my feet/legs and hands/elbows have been swollen for 2 days. I also have slight pressure in my ears. My blood pressure has always been normal, but I have also always had protein in my unrine, even before becoming pregnant. This is my first pregnancy. I just finished anitbiotics for a bladder infection. Could these be the first signs of preeclampsia? What else should I keep an eye out for before I see my doctore in 2 weeks?

OBGYN, Maternal and Fetal Medicine 's  Response
Hi, I have gone through your question. Systemic lupus erythematosus is a condition which flares up in one third cases in pregnancy. The flare up can occur in the form of swelling in hand and feet, increased protein excretion in the urine and increased photosensitive rashes.
The flare up of lupus needs to be differentiated from the pre eclampsia by examination and proper investigations.
I would suggest you to consult an OBGYN specialist to get properly examined, investigated and treated.
Hope you found the answer helpful.
Wishing you good health.
Regards,
Dr Deepti verma
