What Causes Swelling On The Tongue?

Thx! My 78 year old mother is complaining of a swollen tongue to the point that she is putting numbing medicine on the sides of her tongue where there are deep impressions from her teeth in order to be able to sleep. We are wondering what may be causing this and what she can do to fix it. Vitamin deficiency? Reaction to her arthritis medication? or ?? Thx! :)

Hi,

Well if the swelling of tongue is appearing suddenly then it can be probably an Allergic reaction causing swelling and inflammation of tongue.

Other causes can be Amyloid deposits in tongue, inflammation, thyroid disorders etc.

So it is advisable to consult an Emergency room and get her examined.

If the swelling is excessive or continue to grow then it can cause difficulty in breathing snd choking.

So it is advisable to get her evaluated. If it is allergy a steroid shot and anti allergic medicine can be advised for relief.

Hope I have answered your query. Please let me know if I can assist you further.
