Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
What Causes Swelling On Tongue While On Risperdal?
I am concerned my sister in law just started taking resperdal and is having swelling of her tongue. She uses a spoon to prevent her tongue from swelling to the point of her not being able to breath. This normally lasts 30 minutes. Is this normal until she gets used to the medication?
I have gone through your query and can understand your concerns..
As per your complain it seems that your sister in law is suffering from allergic reaction to Risperdal that contain active ingredient Risperidone that is an anti-psychotic drug.. At times as the body starts becoming used to the medication the side effects subsides but in case if there is antibody formation in the body against the medication the symptoms can continue to exaggerate and as the symptoms are in the form of swollen tongue there can closing of throat leading to severe choking and breathing difficulty.... I would suggest you to consult her treating physician and get evaluated and he can do a proper clinical evaluation and can advise her either reduction in dose of Risperidone or change the drug..
Hope this information helps..
Thanks and regards. Dr.Honey Nandwani Arora.
