What Causes Swelling ,redness And Pain In Little Toe?

My little toe suddenly bruised for no reason. No injury. Now, it s swollen and red on the inside of the toe toward the 4th toe. It is also painful. I m a little concerned because my mother had poor circulation and ended up with part of her foot amputated.I m 60 years old and in excellent health. I do not take any meds, including aspirin which I m allergic to.

Hi,

Presence of bruise, followed by swelling and pain- this triad typically indicates inflammation. This can follow minor trauma or insect bite, which might have gone unnoticed, or a local infection progressing to cellulitis. It is unlikely related to poor circulation- here we expect paleness rather than erythema and won't come all of a sudden like this.

You can try paracetamol/ibuprofen(hope you are not allergic to) thrice daily for 3 days. If not getting better by then, kindly see your doctor foe further evaluation.

Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Muhammed Aslam TK, Pediatrician
