Hello,
Thank you for asking at HCM.
If you had swelling around the ankle after a long walk than it is more likely it is due to small sprains. It might be coming back probably because it gets hurt again after walking the other days. You seem to have done the right things. You have seen a doctor and have done an xray which we do to be sure there is no fracture but very likely it will come out normal. What i would recommend to do till you get the results of the xray is:
1. You can use advil to help with pain and swelling if you are not allergic to it- have it after food so to protect your stomach. You can get 600 mg every 6 hours after food
2. put an elastic band on the ankle- this will help give some support to the ankle and prevent further damage while you walk. It should not be very tight because it might compromise the circulation- if your foot feels cold or numb you will need too loosen it. Do not keep the elastic band at night
3. Whenever sited put your foot up on a stool or chair to help reduce the swelling
4. Do not do extra activties like sport or long walking till you are better
5. it might take 1-2 weeks for the swelling to totally go if no fracture found in the xray and pain might take even ore time so just be patient
6. If no fracture in the xray and you are not improving in the next 5-7 days or any worsening you will need to speak with your doctor.
7. If there is a fracture the doctor will advise you the right treatment for it.

I hope this answers to your question and is helpful to you

Best regards,
