What Causes Swelling Under Chin And In Glands?

hello I ve been sick with a bad cold, coughing, sore ear, sore throat. I went to a walk in and was subscribed some meds benzonatate for the cough, azithromycin, 250mg and ear drops ciprodex. the next day I woke up with swollen glands, and swollen area under my chin, that is sensitive to the touch. Is this a side effect of one of the meds, or another issue?

Greetings from HCM members,

I understand your query and concern.
Your swollen glands under the chin area are lymph nodes which may be inflamed because of infection i.e cold and sore throat. Every individual has lymph nodes which are important part of lymphatic system and they help to filter out the bacteria and other pathogens in order to improve our health.

Mostly these glands remain swollen for transitory period and problem resolves within few days. Sometimes, the glands can take around a week or two. Rarely, the glands swell as a side effect of medications. However, for now i would suggest you to complete your antibiotic coarse and do symptomatic treatment for swollen glands which include:

1. Take painkiller
2. Gargle with lukewarm salt water.
3. Apply a mild warm and wet compress such as a washcloth dipped in hot water apply to the affected area. This can lessen the inflammation and help resolve the pain.

However, if the glands continue to remain swollen for more than a week, consult your physician for further investigation.

Hope this answers your query. Please do no hesitate to ask if you have any other related question.

Regards,
Dr. Khoja
