Last week I had a sore throat on and off, and then it became full blown and felt a bit swollen for the past 4 fays. Also been achy and congested. Just wondering if this falls into the get lots of rest and drink fluids category or if I should see a doctor. Normally I get over my colds overnight, so this is a bit much for me.
Well, sore throat can be due to bacterial or viral Infection in throat. Many a times getting on and off pain and discomfort is due to the fact that you are not taking appropriate treatment and the infection does not get subsided completely and flairs up repeatedly. As the pain is occurring repeatedly you should get clinically checked by a doctor. If needed to confirm the diagnosis, a throat swab culture can be done.
For now you should do warm saline gargles 2-3 times a day and drink warm fluids. Take soft diet and avoid sour and spicy foods. You can take anti inflammatory painkiller like Ibuprofen to reduce inflammation and pain. If you are still congested then doing steam inhalations and warm fluid intake will help. Also, avoid air conditioned atmosphere to reduce congestion. Using a humidifier at night can help in relief.
Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.
