What Causes Swollen And Stiff Hands?

Hello, My step-mother age 70 is experiencing a sudden onset of swollen stiff hands that are drawn up into a claw like form in the mornings. She cannot use her hands. Some days she is better and some days not so. Advil and aspirin are being taken. Dr. is testing for Rheumatoid Arthritis. No results yet. She is otherwise in good health with no medications being taken. Strong. Thanks so much.

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi,

For specific medication she has to wait till the pathology reports come. Let her continue with the medication she has. At the most she can add half a dose more to be taken after eating only. Even if it turns to be rheumatoid arthritis, she can be managed with specific medication and physiotherapy.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Vasudha Jayant Athavale, General & Family Physician
