What Causes Swollen And Tender Bruise On Shin After An Injury?

I play softball and about 2 months ago when I was up to bat the ball ricocheted off my bat and into my shin. It didn't swell real bad at the time or even after. But I still have the bruise, it's still swollen and really tender. Is there something wrong? Do shin bruises just take longer to heal?

Hi..
Can understand your concern..

As per your complain due to trauma there is injury to the soft tissues leading to inflammation as well as due to sudden blow the small blood vessels gets ruptures leading to spillage of blood into the soft tissues forming a HEMATOMA as well as there is formation of inflammatory exudate and the spilled blood and the exudate when accumulated below the skin leads to swelling and bruising due to hematoma formation..

It takes a comparatively longer time as the hematoma disintegrates slowly as well as due to inflammation there is overgrowth of fibrous tissue as well as appearance of inflammatory cells in that region and at times the hematoma gets encapsulated and there is a hard swollen region which takes a comparatively longer time to resolve..

You should do alternate warm and cold compresses over the swollen shin as it will help in healing faster..

You should apply Thrombophob gel over the swelling as it helps in faster disruption of clot as it contains Heparin Sodium..

In case of pain you can take anti inflammatory painkiller like Ibuprofen..

Slowly the bruising will disappear and gradually the swelling will reduce in size and resolve..

Hope this information helps..
