What Causes Swollen Areola?

Hello, I have been experiencing the swelling of the base around my nipple, I believe to be referred to as the areola. This is not painful at all. It only happens when my body is warm from having on a shirt or just being out on a hot day. When I take off my shirt in a cool area or when I feel cold from my setting, they shrink and look like....well normal. Can you tell me what this is?

General Surgeon 's  Response
Hello,

It could be due to minor hormonal changes. As a first line management, you can take mefenamic acid for pain relief.

Generally, it will settle by itself. If symptoms persist, it is better to consult a physician and get evaluated.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Take care

Regards,
Dr Shinas Hussain, General & Family Physician
