What Causes Swollen Face, Headache And Rashes On Ear Of A Child?

Hello, My 3 year old daughter woke up this morning with a swollen face mainly focused around her nose, cheeks, and mouth area. Her face was also red and warm in these areas. The inside of her ears were red and warm last night but not too bad today. In the middle of the night, she complained that her head hurt but then went back to sleep. Today, she also has a small rash by her right ear along her hair line. She doesn t have a fever and is not complaining about her face at all, thank goodness but we weren t sure what would be causing it. Any suggestions on what it could be or what we could give her? We thought it might have to do with her sinuses and them being swollen, so we gave her the non-medicated nasal spray and Zyrtec. Thanks, Stacy

Hello and welcome to HCM,
Redness and swelling of face associated with a rash is suggestive of viral infection in a three year old toddler.
A viral infection known as slapped cheek syndrome or fifth disease or erythema infectiosum is characterized by fever, rash and red cheek giving an appearance of slapped cheek.
The symptoms described by you are suggestive of slapped cheek syndrome.
You need to consult your pediatrician for clinical assessment for definitive diagnosis.
In case, viral infection is confirmed symptomatic treatment will be required in the form of anti-pyretics and maintenance of hydration and nutrition.
If the infection turns out to be slapped cheek syndrome, the child is not infectious now.
The viral infection is contagious before the rash develops.
