What Causes Swollen Forehead And Nose Bridge, Sunburns On Scalp And Hairline?

I had a little bit of sunburn on my scalp and hairline and a couple of days later my forehead swelled all the way down the bridge of my nose and to my eyes. I also used a new waterproof mascara the day the swelling occurred. What could have caused this swelling and could it happen again

General Surgeon 's  Response
Hello,

The development of swelling over forehead, nose bridge and sunburn over scalp and hair line do indicate definite allergic reaction to new mascara for cosmetic purpose. It is the response through IgE mediated phenomenon, which gives release of histamine and other granules from the mast cells of the body responsible for the variety of allergic symptoms as described above.

The following measures will help you for better recovery:
- Immediate consultation at an ER for severe discomfort for intramuscular shot of an Epinephrine or steroids intravenously as per the choice of ER consultant
- Keeping the area clean with antiseptic liquid or soap
- Local application of ice
- Use of aloe vera gel
- Tablet of anti histamine properties such as Diphenhydramine, Loratidine or Cetirizine
- Oral steroids have no role to play for immediate relief

Do remember not to use the same mascara in future to avoid further such episodes.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Bhagyesh V. Patel, General Surgeon
