What Causes Swollen Hands With Stiff Fingers In An Elderly Person?

Hi. My 84 year old father has been suffering with swollen hands for a few months. He can neither make a fist nor can he straighten his fingers out. Both hands are very puffy and his fingers are stiff and sore. This seemed to come on suddenly. His doctor says it is arthritis (but did not test positive for RA) and there is little they can do for him. He is miserable. He cannot take Ibuprofin due to blood thinners, and his doctor also said there is a medicine that would help his arthritis but he can t take it also because of blood thinner (Xeralto). He had a cortisone shot about 2 months ago in one finger that was bothering him. Since that time both hands have been afflicted with the pain and swelling. He is now on his second round of Prednisone for 10 days each. I just don t know what to do to help him. He takes a pill (not sure what med) to manage Type 2 Diabetes. His blood sugar is usually around 108, so the doctor doesn t seem to be concerned with afflictions related to diabetes. I m wondering if he could have early onset CHF? He is also losing weight without trying, his legs have become very weak and he is having a difficult time walking and even getting his pants on. Any initial thoughts?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
HI, thanks for using healthcare magic

CCF can cause swelling but the swelling is not usually limited to the hands.

There would be build up of fluid in the lungs causing shortness of breath, palpitations etc.
There would also be swelling of the legs as well.

Since he has unintended weight loss, he should have blood tests to try to find the cause.
This should include complete blood count and ESR (an inflammatory marker).

I hope this helps
