Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
I went to the Doctor on Friday to have a deep cleaning done. When the Dr. gave me the novacaine shot somehow she hit a gland near my right ear and my face has been swollen ever since, even after hot and cold compresses to bring the swelling down. She also prescribed me 500 mg Amoxicillin and the swelling has not gone down. What should be my next steps? The Dr. said it was probably a hemotoma and will just take time for the swelling to go down. HELP!
As per your complain swelling on face after a Novocaine shot can be most probably due to Hematoma formation..
This occurs when the needle is accidentally pushed too deep into the tissues and it reaches the Pterygoid plexus of veins..
It causes hematoma formation due to seepage of blood into the soft tissues..
It takes time to regress in size so keep patience and you can just do alternate warm and cool compresses over the swelling.. If there is pain and discomfort then a course of antibiotics and pain relievers can be taken for a short duration..
Hope this helps..
Regards.
