What Causes Swollen Lymph Nodes In The Neck Along With Appetite Loss?

My 21 year old son was seen in the er on Friday and again on Saturday for swelling of lymph nodes in neck and face. He has loss of appetite x 3 days, was running very low fever, no energy. First doctor ran some tests then prescribed him codeine (??) but no antibiotics. Second doc also ran blood tests and prescribed antibiotics. This is a rural community, and blood tests will not be available for a few days. What could be causing this?
