What Causes Swollen Neck Lymph Node Along With Stiff Neck?

Hello, my child has a swollen lymph node in the side of his neck, he s complaining of aching everywhere, has a stiff neck, sore sounding voice and has bloodshot eyes. He s had a fever of 39.6 C for 3 days, which has been controlled by he s still in a low fever. I ve been to see a doctor already and he s been on antibiotics for 4 days with only a small improvement: He s eating slightly more now and the swelling in his neck has reduced slightly. I m still slightly worried about him.

Hi Dear,

Welcome to HCM.

Understanding your concern. As per your query you are having symptoms of wollen neck lymph node along with stiff neck . Well there can be many reasons for symptoms you mention in query like reactionary lymphadinitis , tonsillitis , viral infection or allergic reaction . Stiffness of neck can also occur due to cervical problem or muscle spasm .You should consult an Otolaryngologist and get evaluated and get tested for bacterial infection like throat swab test and viral infection like viral culture test to rule out the exact cause of infection and treatment can be planned accordingly. Doctor may prescribe anti bacterial or anti viral depending upon the diagnosis . If there are recurring episodes of the same then Tonsillectomy will only provide permanent relief. But in case if the swelling does not resolve a BIOPSY of the lymph nodes can help in making a correct diagnosis and a proper treatment . For now apply warm compresses to swelling and take anti histamine like benadryl.
