What Causes Swollen Right Ankle After Minor Injury On Right Calf?

Hi,On Friday I was in a minor bike accident gone awry whereupon I got a 30cm laceration in my right calf (likely from my bike s fender). At the hospital I got 23 stitches (3 internal and 20 external). The amazing thing is that it didn t and still doesn t really hurt too much. However, i just noticed that my right ankle is swollen. It doesn t hurt until I push on it. They x-rayed me at the hospital and no bones were broken. What could be causing this? Should I return to the emergency? Thx.

This is a normal reaction of the body following injury. Keep your right leg elevated. I mean, when you sit, keep it on a chair or something. In lying down position , you can keep a couple of pillows beneath your foot. You can also do some gentle exercises like extension and flexion of your right ankle joint. Do not do anything that hurts. take rest and allow the wound to heal. Go to the ER only if there is continuous pain or you see any bleeding from the wound. Wishing you quick recovery.
