What Causes Swollen Tongue Along With Shortness Of Breath?

Hi, I m an EMT but I m seriously lost with this one, My mother is complaining of her tongue swelling, shortness of breath, trouble swallowing, and she states that it feels as if she s developing esophageal spasms. No fever, joint pain, or anything of that nature, just the symptoms above. Has history of Anxiety, acid reflux.

Hi..
Welcome to HEALTHCARE MAGIC..

I have gone through your query and can understand your concerns.

As per your complain it seems that swollen tongue along with shortness of breath can occur most commonly due to some sort of allergic reaction and the most common cause for it can be allergy to some food or medication...

Other causes can be infection, inflammation while certain autoimmune conditions can also be a cause..

I would suggest you to consult a Medicine Specialist or an Immunologist and get evaluated and a thorough clinical evaluation and investigations like blood test, endoscopy and also tongue biopsy, if needed can be advised to rule out the cause and treatment can be done accordingly..

She can be advised anti-histamines and steroids to reduce swelling while the appropriate treatment can be done as per cause..

Hope this helps..

Regards..
