What Causes Swollen Tonsils And Fever After Having Unprotected Oral Sex?

Hello, I slept with 3 people over the last 2 months and all of them were clean according to them. I had oral sex with 2 of them. Nothing happened then. I had deep throat with one guy recently and I felt an itch in my throat. And for the past 3 days I have had a very swollen tonsils and I can barely gulp. I had fever which showed infection and I have started my antibiotic course as per my doctors advice. Im just worried and I hope its nothing else. All the oral sex was unprotected. We had no anal sex.

Hello,

The swollen tonsils and fever after unprotected oral sex indicate possible issue of bacterial infection. There can be genital organisms which lodge into the tonsils and give enlargement of the same secondary to bacterial growth. In my clinic, after starting of empiric antibiotics to cover the possible gram positive and negative bugs, a culture swab report of the tonsil is best helpful predictor to guide future therapy.

Once the culture report turns out, one can cut down the spectrum of therapy or widen the range as per the sensitivity pattern of the responsible bugs. Till that time, follow additional guidelines for better recovery
- Drink more liquids in sessions including boiled water
- Do gargles with salted lukewarm water, epsom salt, peppermint oil
- Anti pyretic as paracetamol or acetaminophen
- Avoid further oral sex till complete recovery
- Avoid stress and anxiety

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
