What Causes Tachycardia While On Losartan And Amlodipine Besylate?

I am a combination of Losartan and amiodipine besylate for low grade blood pressure elevation. Have noted during bike spinning class that my heart rate does not go above 120 whereas other riders have much higher heart rates. Could this be due to my taking the calcium channel blocker amiodipine?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,

Amlodipine affects mostly the blood vessels and not so much the heart, so it reduces the blood pressure but does not have an important effect on the heart rate. Other calcium channel blockers such as verapamil have a stronger effect on the heart and affect the heart rhythm.

Very likely in your case, the heart rate does not increase much because you are fit. People that exercise regularly, generally have a low heart rate and it does not increase much during exercise.

If you experience any chest pain or shortness of breath or irregular rhythm, you will need to see your doctor.

I hope this answers your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
