What Causes Tail Bone Pain In A 12 Year Old?

My 12 year old son has been complaing of his tailbone hurting when he runs. He never got hit there on never landed on it wrong. He can barely run and has to lay down because it hurts so bad. The only thing he can think of is he was playing soccer but never got hit. This has been happening just the last few days.
