What Causes Temporary Dysarthria?

My 5 yr old son has temporary (lasting 2-6 hrs) that started about a yr ago. Then the 2nd incident was 3 months later, then 3 months after that, and more recently it happens up to twice a week. No confusion is displayed. He answers all my questions accurately and insists on still playing. He has been diagnosed at the age of 3 with PPD (autism, though he is high functioning) accompanied with a sensory disorder (touch, feel, sensation & texture) and ADHD. A 72 hr EGG was normal, as well as a MRI and CAT Scan. He has allergies and asthma. His IgE is extremely high but his skin tests were basically normal. We live in Columbus Ga where the irritants are high, but his allergist doesnt feel that he needs more than his current prescriptions. I asked about allergy shots, and he said no need. He takes Advair, Singular, Zyrtex, Nasonex and Depakote. He had several ear infections that led to ear tubes but has since fell out around the age of 3. He also had his nasal adnoids removed the same day his tubes were put in. He has melt downs about 3 times a month at school, is in an IEP (Special Ed in main stream) and is believed due to his sensitivity, triggers, and unknowns related to his autism. He is extremely strong for his age and is naturally athletically gifted. I am very concern with his temporary dysarthria that appears to be occurring more frequently. Being that there s nothing consistent that indicates a trigger for his dysarthria, I m struggling to find an answer of the cause. His first onset a yr ago started with u control of his right side from closing tight of his right eye to his right hand balled up and his right arm presenting like a chicken wing. The right side displays lasted maybe 20 minutes and seemed to relax but his slurred speech remained for 4 hours. On his forehead to the top of the front of his head you can feel where his skull fused and the seam feels like a hard cord. This has been present since his was a yr old. He doesn t state it hurts when I lightly push down on it feeling for abnormalities, however he does say that it makes him have a headache when I feel on his left side on the midline seam on his forehead. Dont know if this means anything but I don t want to miss nothing. Especially with all his tests results being normal, other than his IgE. He drinks plenty of water. He loves milk. He loves sweets. Eats pretty much balanced meals. I am at a lost.... Please help. Single Mother, An Army Soldier, Mother of 2, Michelle

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi,

Regarding his dysarthria (slurred speech), there could be various possible causes, such as neurological issues, seizures, or medication side effects. Given his medical history and the fact that there is no consistent trigger, it would be best to consult with his primary care physician and/or a neurologist.

Regarding his allergies and asthma, it's not uncommon for skin tests to be normal despite high IgE levels. In some cases, blood tests can be more accurate in identifying allergens. Allergy shots (immunotherapy) can be an effective long-term treatment option for reducing the severity of allergies, but it's up to your son's allergist to determine if this treatment is appropriate for him.

It's also essential to ensure that his current medications are being appropriately managed and monitored by his healthcare providers and that any potential side effects are evaluated. Finally, it's crucial to prioritize your son's health and seek medical attention whenever necessary.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.
