What Causes Tenderness Along With Pain In The Jaw?

i have been having severe l-sided jaw pain in the joint, very tender to touch. it will radiate to the lower jaw and sometimes affect the whole left side of the face. I have gone to my dentist and had a temporary crown started, but with x-rays and sensitivity test on my teeth could not duplicate the pain. I will see my regular Dr next week, but not even Advil or tylenol work for very long.

Hi..
Thanks for the query..

I have gone through your query and can understand your concern.

As per your complain it seems that pain on the left side of face with tender joint is not appearing to be due to any tooth but is due to the disturbances in the functioning of jaw joint known as Temporomandibular joint leading to TMJ/TMD..

Common causes for such symptoms can be dislocation in the jaw joint, damaged articular disc that is a soft cushion present between two bony ends of the jaw joint etc.

I would suggest you to consult an Oral Physician and get a thorough evaluation and a full mouth x-ray known as Orthopantomogram done..

As of now you can take anti-inflammatory painkiller Ibuprofen, muscle relaxant like Chlorzoxasone and do warm compresses over the jaw.
Take a soft diet and avoid excessive mouth opening..

The physician can evaluate you clinically and along with painkillers and muscle relaxants he can also advise you mouth guards and physiotherapy..

Hope this information helps..

Thanks and regards.
